Mustangs In The News

I have been following the wild mustang horse round up in Nevada recently. A judge ruled that the round up of about 2,500 wild horses and burros could proceed. The majority of wild horses live in Nevada but many other states have wild horse heards as well but not to the size and magnitude of Nevada. The range land in Nevada cannot support the current herd size.

The reasons for a round up sound solid to me. Once a large portion of the heard is rounded up then as many as can be will be auctioned off. So far I'm good with that. At least these noble steeds will be cared for. What isn't auctioneed off will be corraled in the mid Western states. The legal question is does the Interior Department have the legal authority to corral wild horses and burros. Cuurently they house around 32,000 wild mustangs and burros.

The judge said the ultimately Congress will have to decide if Interior Department can legally house wild horses. I have to wonder if it is humane to corral wild horses? There has got to be a better way to manage the mess the 1971 law to manage wild heards of horses and burros has created.

The eco system needs to be managed but the life of the horse, health and quality, needs to be considered. What about transplanting the heards to other western states and balance out the horse populations so Nevada doesn't have bear the brunt of it all.

But then what about the 32,000 already living a corraled life.  That's expensive to tax payers and unfair to a wild beast to be held somewhere between ferral and domesticated.

Are the other countries with climates favorable to the wild horses that might like to have some wild heards. Horses are to majestic to be cared for this way. I don't have all the answers but I think that the current plan is short sighted and not in harmony with the quality of life that wild horses deserve.
