Irish Jewelry - Celtic Jewelry - Same Or Different
Is there a difference between Irish jewelry and Celtic jewelry? Are they the same with different names? The answer is yes and know and I thing the confusion between the two types of jewelry: Irish and Celtic is where you live and your knowledge of European history.
I was on Facebook in an Irish group and there was a Irish gentlemen and I asked him this same question. He said it's all Irish jewelry to us. I think where you live makes a difference. In America we tend to separate them but the Europeans refer to it all as Irish jewelry.
The Celtic people at one point lived through most of Europe but were driven westward until they ended up in the UK: England, Ireland, Whales and Scotland. The Celts had no written language so they could explain the meanings of the Celtic symbolism that made its way into jewelry. The Celts gave way to the Irish and Scottish people which did have a written language and their culture was partially a hold over from the Celtics mixed with there own culture.
The Scots and Irish people added to their jewelry heritage symbols unique to their own cultures.Generally Celtic jewelry is made with Celtic knots and Irish jewelry is a reflection of their own culture. Since there seems to be a difference at the cultural level Americans tend to separate the Celtic knot jewelry from the Irish jewelry.
